How did you become interested in architecture?
After touring a Frank Lloyd Wright house in high school, I was hooked. I realized that architects use a variety of seemingly disconnected skills that I valued. As an architecture student, I get to draw, write, think critically, and work with my hands – usually at the same time!

What kind of career do you hope to have?
I hope to work somewhere in the space between architecture and history. I think we have an important obligation to learn from and protect the buildings of people who came before us. Either as an architect, historian, or preservationist (maybe all three,) I want to contribute to that work.

What is your favorite thing about UNC Charlotte, the College of Arts + Architecture, or the School of Architecture?
I love the freedom and support that the COA+A has given me to pursue my own unique interests. I’ve been able to major in both architecture and history, while conducting research through the anthropology department. This combination of studies would not have been possible without help from the SoA’s incredibly supportive faculty.

Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
Freedom By Design, a design-centered service organization, lets me use some of the skills I’ve learned in school to benefit the Charlotte community. We’re currently working to improve Charlotte bus stops by displaying work from local artists. This summer, I’m also working with the Charlotte Museum of History to organize a Mid-Century Modern architecture appreciation tour.

Can you talk about your experience being a merit scholarship student?
The Levine Scholars Program (LSP) has provided several opportunities for me to pursue my academic and personal interests. I’ve benefited from LSP-supported research opportunities, service work, and even a wilderness backpacking trip in Wyoming.

When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
If I have the time, I love finding old buildings to sketch and admire. Besides that, I enjoy reading, going on hikes, and playing board games with friends.
