Give a little general information about yourself: How did you become interested in architecture?
I became interested in architecture by playing with Legos when I was young and designing my own structures, including parks and buildings. I loved building with these so much that I started a club in my school when to get other kids involved. I also grew up with Frank Lloyd Wright books in the house and found architecture through reading these and researching other architects. I built original wooden and cardboard models and also drew inventions or ideas I had when I was younger; I still do. When I attended architecture camps, I knew I was where I was supposed to be.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I hope to obtain a Masters in Architecture as well as either an Urban Design/Planning focus or degree. I want to create spaces where people interact, such as neighborhoods, shopping centers, other communities, or sections of a city. I hope to create sustainable, eco-friendly, green architecture by intertwining the environment with the design as much as possible. I want to mix the two to create one holistic piece, without one overpowering the other but rather enhancing it. I hope to eventually work for myself, but I will also be happy working at a firm that shares my same focus.
What is your favorite thing about UNC Charlotte, the College of Arts + Architecture, or the School of Architecture?
My favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture is how interdisciplinary it is and how students get free tickets to galleries, performances, and shows. Another thing I really like is how open the college is, through the layout of the studios and the ceremony welcoming us all to the college. All these things make you truly feel a part of the CoA+A community, no matter the program or the graduating class you are in.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community? If so, please describe.
I have gone to galleries and showings in the Charlotte arts community and I also have attended lectures to learn more about the community and the creative solutions they are using to improve Charlotte.
What's it like being in the Arts + Architecture Honors Program?
The most important thing that I have gained from this program includes insights into the other disciplines and how I can use that knowledge in my work to make it better.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
For fun, I like to read, play tennis, and make models/work on personal projects. I also enjoy hanging out with friends and exploring UNC Charlotte as well as Charlotte!
