Evan Ringel is a trombonist hailing from Hillsborough, NC and has served as the Jazz Trombone instructor at UNC-Charlotte since January 2019. Praised for his “warm, welcoming sound” and “thoughtful, introspective arranging” (Jazz Times), Evan graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies. He is a performer and clinician throughout North Carolina and the East Coast with several different groups encompassing a variety of diverse genres. During his time at UNC-Greensboro, Evan performed as lead trombone in the school's jazz ensemble for each of his eight semesters. He has been lead trombone in the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra since the band's inception in 2013 and also performs regularly with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. Additionally, Evan is a frequent performer with small jazz combos as both a leader and a sideman. While his background is in jazz, Evan has also relished pushing the boundaries of the trombone in different genres and unique ensembles. In 2014, he joined the folk group Look Homeward as a trombonist/violinist; the group released their second album, Gold Plated Dime, in February 2019. Evan is also a member of the chamber music ensemble threeplustwo, a group he co-founded with his triplet siblings Lowell (a jazz bassist) and Ivy (a classical bassoonist), along with their frequent musical collaborators Jonah Udall (guitar) and David Leon (saxophone). The group's self-titled debut was released in November 2018. Evan currently lives in Hillsborough, NC with his partner Ariel and their dog Joni, where he is pursuing a dual degree in law and mass communication at the University of North Carolina.
