Greer grew up in Charlotte and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a minor in French from the College of Wooster. Prior to coming to UNC Charlotte she worked for a non-profit after-school program and in higher education as a student services coordinator and academic advisor. Her creative work explores relational aesthetics and how community can be fostered through shared meals. Her senior thesis project, Come to the Table, integrated bread and ceramics in sculptural forms, offering bread each day as an invitation for visitors to participate in the exhibit. She continues to work with ceramics and has made dishes for a variety of groups and events.

bread on a table next to potterWhat medium is your artistic practice and how did you become interested in art/design? My most focused work has been with pottery, with one gallery exhibit in college that combined bread and ceramics. I also enjoy dabbling in a variety of 2d work from sketching to collage, along with some bookmaking and work with textiles. I find that most of my work considers the themes of stories, food, and community in one form or another. I have always enjoyed making things and playing in the dirt. That took a more productive turn with pottery classes in middle school and AP Art History was fascinating in high school. It was a natural progression to study art in college.

Do you participate in any community cultural activities or work in the Charlotte arts/design community? I've been involved with the Clayworks community since moving back to Charlotte, most recently in a volunteer capacity (at various times in the past I was a studio assistant, studio artist, and took classes.)

Can you tell us about any recent projects you've worked on? Most recently, I've been doing smaller commission work as I've had time. One project I really enjoyed before COVID-19 was making a set of 24 place settings and serving dishes for Over the Rhine. The band is turning a barn in rural Ohio into a music venue and has hosted songwriting workshops. I love the poetry and spirit of their work and their recognition that music and art can heal. It was exciting to be able to contribute to the project in a practical way and know my work will continue to be quietly used in the background of gatherings of creative types, helping facilitate meals and the community that happens around tables.

What is your favorite thing about UNC Charlotte or The College of Arts + Architecture? I love the people I work with and enjoy being part of a college where my broad creative interests can have a home.

What do you like to do for fun? I like to cook, read, garden, play with my schnauzer, and do anything outside!
