Summer Programs

Our summer study abroad programs provide our students the opportunity to infuse their education with valuable inter-cultural experience while earning typically three to six credit hours toward their degrees.

TOKYO STUDIO 2021

[May 22 - June 30, 2021] / 6.0 credits
Led by Professor Chris Jarrett - School of Architecture

Tokyo

Set within the worlds largest urban economy, TOKYO STUDIO will open a series of urban and architectural questions concerning the nature of public and private life in a city of 13 million. Designed for students enrolled in the School of Architecture, Tokyo Studio will expose students to contemporary Japanese architecture including the works of Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, SANAA, Shigeru Ban, Junya Ishigami, Sou Fujimoto, Atelier Bow-Wow, Fumihiko Maki, Kenzo Tange, and Kisho Kurakawa, among others.  A global stage for architectural innovation, students will also see works by Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, David Chipperfield, FOA and others.  Destinations are easy to reach using Tokyo’s well-known public transportation system. Tokyo Studio will also take a four-day trip on the bullet train (shinkansen) to visit three islands to the south. Along the way, Japan’s rich history, culture and traditions will be revealed. The program coursework includes site visits, analytical drawings and design speculations with a concluding publication and exhibition of student work in the SoA. Participants will work through two primary modes: measuring and mapping Tokyo's complex urban structure and design projections in the form of a collective speculative project.

Tokyo Studio offers two architecture electives:
(1) ARCH 4050/6050 - Measures + Mapping (3 Credit Hours)
(2) ARCH 4050/6050 - Speculations + Projections (3 Credit Hours)
